My favourite way to think of racism vs institutionalized racism and sexism against women (vis-a-vis misogyny and oppression of women through institutionalized means) vs sexism against men (a comparatively irrelevant but still existing thing) is to think of the words “racism” and…

-You cannot be sexist toward men. Sexism is based on a system of oppression. You CAN be discriminatory, rude, inconsiderate, and/or prejudiced against men but you CANNOT be sexist toward them.

-You cannot be racist towards white people. Racism is based on a system of oppression. You CAN be discriminatory, rude, inconsiderate, and/or prejudiced against white people but you CANNOT be racist toward them.

This is not difficult.

I agree with this definition because it highlights the fact that women are more often the victims of sexism than men, which is true, while still acknowledging that it can happen to any gender (this is not the place for a domestic abuse spiel) .

Racism is defined as first: racial stereotyping, and second: Prejudice or discrimination against someone of a different race based on such a belief [referring to racial stereotyping]

I like this because it acknowledges that it does happen to every race by not limiting it to the western world. In America, Europe, or any other “western” nation, you’d be hard pressed to find mainstream racism towards white people. However, in other countries, such as Japan, you do find discrimination (in Japan’s case, a foreigner, no matter the race, is more likely to be arrested than a native Japanese person doing the same thing) that can be directed towards caucasians.

Your statement would work better if you were talking about oppression rather than the words sexism and racism. You can’t oppress men, because our society is, as of right now, biased. Whites aren’t oppressed because they aren’t specifically targeted, especially in westernized nations.

This has been another one of Namboto’s foolish forays into the world of Social Justice.

if you think you shouldn’t be talking about issues of social justice, perhaps you should either do some research into feminism or racial studies instead of reading a dictionary? if you’re being self-deprecating of your ignorance on these issues because you don’t want to be challenged, well…. hate to break it to you! tumblr doesn’t care. if you address an issue without knowing what you’re talking about, tumblr will rip you apart.

in any case, all you’re doing is picking at the wording of the OP. men hold privilege in most places across the globe (i’m sure there are exceptions but the point stands). white people are not the majority the world over, but they’re the majority on tumblr, i’m sure. most of the people who read the OP probably live in places where white people have the privilege over people of color.

even if you’re rude, discriminatory, prejudiced, or inconsiderate to men or the people who are the racial/ethnic majority, they still have the privilege at the end of the day.

It’s not so much my ignorance (I’m not the most informed, I’ll admit) but rather my past experiences with the tumblr social justice movement that prompted that last little bit there.

And yeah, I was picking at OP’s wording, but not in an attempt to weaken the argument. In fact, I was hoping to strengthen it a little bit, maybe make it more ironclad, so that people who would otherwise contest it could no longer do so (I said something to that effect in my first paragraph (which is gone now?)). I guess it’s not as necessary in a tumblr only context to bring up other nations (although I live in Japan), but, on the other hand, OP was making a general statement, not a tumblr only statement.

And again, I agree with what you’re saying: the group cannot be oppressed, because the group is in power. My only dispute is with the absolutism that OP applied to those words (neither of which are absolutist).

I see what you’re trying to say, and I in no way believe that white people or males are oppressed (if there is oppression, it is relatively minor), but these don’t work with the dictionary definitions of those words (and opponents might use that against you).

Sexism is defined as: prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.

I agree with this definition because it highlights the fact that women are more often the victims of sexism than men, which is true, while still acknowledging that it can happen to any gender (this is not the place for a domestic abuse spiel) .

Roughworld

namboto:

I have been getting SO MANY IDEAS for roughworld you have no idea.

wait, you actually don’t have any idea…

this is to fix that

Roughworld takes place about 20 or 30 years after a technological plague of some sort wiped out a good majority of the population. Most, if not all, of the world leaders were taken, along with many professionals. The more time you spent in front of a screen, the more likely you were to be taken. The plague’s gone now, but technophobia is fairly widespread among the survivors.

The plague, however, was just one of many phenomenon that changed the world into what it is today. Buildings decayed at a super-accelerated rate, creating rusted wastelands out of metropolises. New species mutated from the old, more vicious and adapted to living in these jungles of rust and concrete. Those are just the more visible changes.

Unbeknownst to the majority of what remains of the general population, there was another, much stranger change. Certain people, instead of being taken by the plague, were changed. These changed people have skin that can’t be pierced, even by bullets, and something more: under certain conditions (mostly emotion based), they turn into monsters, becoming robot-like and growing in size (style wise, think mecha, somewhat like the ones in EVA).

The type of govt that formed after the plague is exactly what you think it would be: totalitarian, fear-mongering, and generally bad news. However, it also provides a bit of stability for anyone willing to work for it (at the price of your humanity, of course). They seized power partly through their use of these changed people, turning them into weapons and, soon after, into stories you tell at night to scare children.

There are two main groups of heroes (3 in each party).

The first is a group of scavengers/bounty hunters/whatever you want them to be’s. Their main goal, beyond survival, is to kill each and every changed person they find. They are: Jes, an expert engineer, tactician, and leader; Cain, a gunslinger with a big ego and an even bigger hatred for the changed; and Beth, a young girl that the two protect with their lives. Their stories have them doing odd jobs while looking for leads on the location of various changed.

The second is a group of hunted, and one among them may just be the key to righting what went wrong in the world. Damian, a young changed man with no memory of his past and no idea of his potential; Samantha, a girl who used to long for adventure, before it was thrust on her; and Simon, an older changed man with too many memories of his past and no intention to talk about them. They’re on the run from the government, which is bent on hunting down all changed that they don’t already control.

So yeah, ask me things about the groups or the setting, please.

blogre-ing for anyone that might not have seen it ask me questions I’m desperate

Sexism pisses me off. I don’t care if you’re a feminist or a masculinist or whatever the hell you call yourself. The moment you subject a group of people to criminalization OR victimization is the moment you are nothing but a vile sexist pig.

People suffer. Men are raped. Women are raped. Men are abused. Women are abused.

And that doesn’t even consider the huge amount of people who are not simply ‘man’ or ‘woman’.

I am disgusted by people who pretend to support equality by favoring one sex over another, let alone spreading misinformation to villanize a single sex.
